Program Information:
The NYC Studio provides a full semester of study during the fall and spring semesters for Kent State University students.

All participants are required to sign up for the weekly NY Study Tour; which includes visits to fashion, arts, and cultural-related sites; presents guest speakers from the industry; and provides students with a general orientation to the city.

Classroom experiences will vary each semester. In many cases, pre-requisites apply. Examples include:
            - 21st Century Designers
            - Computer-Aided-Design (CAD) for Fashion
            - Fashion Design I & II
            - Fashion Design or Fashion Merchandising Internship
            - Fashion Entrepreneurship
            - Fashion Forecasting
            - Fashion Merchandise Planning and Buying
            - Fashion Marketing
            - Fashion Studio I & II
            - Product Development in the Fashion Industry
            - Textiles and Apparel in the Global Economy

Most NYC Studio courses are 3 credit hours each.

How Do I Apply?
The NYC Studio Fall and Spring Program is only open to Kent State fashion design and fashion merchandising students. Students should consult their academic advisor to plan for this experience and ensure that it fits in with their academic program.

Registration begins November 1, 2008 for Academic Year 2009-2010. Remember to apply as soon as possible, as spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Housing
Refer to the NYC Studio Housing page for information on housing accommodations.

Program Costs
Costs vary with each semester; however, total cost is determined by the following*:

  • Tuition (determined by students in-state or out-of-state tuition status)
    • Refer to KSU tuition and fees schedule
    • Note: Students are required to register at full-time status, therefore students must register for a minimum of 12 credit hours to be eligible to participate in the program. All NYC Studio courses are three semester credits each.
  • Program Fee: $1,000
  • KSU-arranged housing fee*:
    • Fall 2008:           $5,200
    • Spring 2009:      $6,500
    • Fall 2009:           $6,565
    • Spring 2010:      $7,300

    *The housing fee only covers the room and utilities; meals are not included.

  • Other Costs**:

    Low: $200
    High: $1,000
    Average: $578

    Fashion Merchandising:
    Low: $10
    High: $250
    Average: $75

    Estimate weekly food costs:
    Low: $30

    Estimate weekly transportation costs:
    Low: $6
    High: $22
    Average: $14
    Note: All Fall and Spring semester students will receive a monthly unlimited Metrocard for the full semester.

    Estimate costs for shopping and purchasing gifts for others and yourself:
    Low: $100
    High: $2500
    Average: $700

    Financial Aid

    Students eligible for financial aid that have completed the FAFSA application form may apply funds to the NYC Studio program. Contact Tara Jackson, Financial Aid Coordinator, at tjackson@kent.edu for further information.

    FALL 2008 / SPRING 2009 Financial Aid Estimated Expense Figures

    Estimated food/semester = $1800

    Fashion Design supplies and materials/semester = $600

    Fashion Merchandising supplies and materials/semester = $130

    Transportation Costs/semester = $304

    Note: Financial Aid will not adjust costs for recreation or shopping. Those expenses will already be incorporated into the regular financial aid budget under personal expenses.
