The Fashion School admits students on a rolling basis corresponding with the University’s Admissions calendar. Concurrently with submission of the application for admission to the University, students interested in the Fashion Design major should submit the skills assessment as indicated in the instructions accompanying the assignment.
- Students may indicate the Conceptual Track or the Technical Track when they apply for the degree program in fashion design. The freshman year is exactly the same for both tracks so students have time to work with their advisor and make a decision. Change of track is possible at any point, but additional coursework may be required if a change is made after the freshman year.
Fashion Design, Conceptual Track:
To understand the design process from concept to creation, including research, illustration, flat sketches, and garment construction appropriate to a specific market.
Fashion Design, Technical Track:
To understand the garment construction including an ability to analyze a garment and communicate to a factory how to construct the garment using the appropriate industry finishes appropriate to a specific market. This includes an understanding and mastery of tech packs, the creation of spec sheets, and correcting fit.
- Based upon academic criteria and skills assessment evaluation, 90 students are selected for admission to the program in the fall semester.
- Please DO NOT SEND any information other than what is required in the assignment. In order to keep the review process fair to all applying, we will not consider letters of recommendation or additional artwork sent for review.
Notes:
- Students who do not meet the academic criteria will not be accepted to the Fashion Design major; however, they may be admitted to the university as Fashion Preparatory majors (PFDM). They may submit the skills assessment at any time, and it will be held for one full year.
- Students not admitted due to academic performance (GPA and/or test scores) may initiate the process for declaring the Fashion Design major after completing at least 12 hours of non-developmental coursework at Kent State University with a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher.
- Students who are not admitted based on evaluation of the skills assessment may be admitted to Kent State University as Fashion Preparatory majors and may resubmit the skills assessment the following year for consideration.
- Courses for Fashion Design begin in the fall of each academic year, and the curriculum requires eight semesters of study; therefore, students admitted to the Fashion Design program can expect at least four years of study from the time they begin the major coursework.
